August 24 in Orange County California will forever be dedicated to the memory of basketball icon Kobe Bryant after the area’s Board of Supervisors passed a vote to name the day in his honour.
Bryant, who made his home in Newport beach in Orange County, famously wore both numbers 8 and 24 during his legendary NBA career for the Los Angeles Lakers, making August 24 the perfect date to commemorate him.
On Monday, local residents will celebrate the life of Bryant, who’s illustrious career spanned 20 years including five championships and 18 All-Star selections for the Lakers.
On January 26 this year, Bryant, his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others died in a tragic helicopter crash in Calabasas, stirring a worldwide outpouring of shock and grief.
Given the impact of Bryant’s legacy, the day is expected to be recognised across the entire US and internationally.
