Natural Burials are now available at Wollongong Lawn Cemetery!
The natural burial process allows the body to be recycled in the soil and is an alternative to typical contemporary burial methods.
It involves:
- A body being prepared without chemical preservatives or embalming fluid.
- The person being dressed in simple cotton or hemp clothing. They can also be buried without clothes.
- Being buried in a biodegradable coffin made of cardboard, cane, bamboo or wicker, without any synthetic lining.
- The grave not using a burial vault that would prevent the body’s contact with soil.
Wollongong Council has set aside the south-western corner of the cemetery for natural burials, alongside pine trees and dense, natural vegetation.
The ground will not include any headstones, monuments of plaques to minimise the impact on the environment as much as possible.
When someone is placed into a natural burial site, its GPS points will be recorded. These details can be given to family members and friends, who can put the GPS points into a smart phone and find the grave to visit.
