Gun ownership on the rise locally

The number of people with guns in some Illawarra suburbs has climbed almost 40% since 2010.

A Fairfax Media investigation has found thousands of firearms are registered in our region with the 2530 postcode topping the list - that includes suburbs like Kanahooka, Marshall Mount and Dapto.

There's also been a 38% jump in gun ownership in suburbs like Oak Flats, Shellharbour, Helensburgh and Otford.
