Officers were called to a domestic violence related incident around 9am - where it's alleged a 23 year old man armed with knives locked himself inside the home.

The three hour siege ended with the man exiting the home before being tasered, arrested and taken to Wollongong hospital as a precaution.

He's been charged, and refused bail to face Wollongong Court today (Thursday).

Fairy Meadow Demonstration School is in lock-down - and the home is said to be directly across the road.

Police say all children at the school are safe.

The Princes Highway remains closed in both directions - with diversions in place.
