NSW Police to enforce new social distancing restrictions

NSW Police to enforce new social distancing restrictions

The rate of coronavirus in Australia is slowing, but government and health officials say more needs to be done to stop the spread.

Tighter restrictions will come into force from today, reducing the number of people in public gatherings from 10 to just two.

Playgrounds and skate parks will be closed, while outdoor gyms wont be allowed to operate. This includes Wollongong's 145 play spaces and five skate parks.

Wollongong Council says it will continue to maintain the playgrounds and parks during the closure.

NSW Police officers now have the ability to enforce social distancing and hand out on-the-spot fines of $1,000 for people not following the restrictions in place.

This includes anyone not in isolation for 14 days after returning from overseas, and being involved in a mass gathering.

Businesses who break the rules could cop a $5,000 fine.

Meantime, states and territories are moving to ensure tenants hit by the financial impacts of the pandemic can't be evicted for the next six months.

The Prime Minister is urging tenants, landlords and the banks to work together.
