CORONAVIRUS UPDATES



The World Health Organization has announced that COVID-19 is now classified as a global pandemic. We will be updating this page with more information about the outbreak as it becomes available, also providing information on how best to slow the spread of COVID-19, and what are the symptoms.

SYMPTOMS

The symptoms of COVID-19 can range from a mild illness to pneumonia, depending on the subject's immune system. Whilst some people may recover quickly, the virus may make others very sick.

Symptoms that you are encouraged to be aware of are:

  • Fever
  • Flu-like symptoms, such as coughing, sore throat, and fatigue
  • Shortness of breath

If you are concerned that you may have contracted the virus, you can check your symptoms through HealthDirect or call the Coronavirus Health Hotline, where you will be given advice. The number for this service is 1800 020 080, and operates 24/7.

GETTING TESTED
When getting tested, it is important to call ahead of time to book your appointment and take precautions when arriving for treatment. It is recommended that you wear a mask to protect others, and stay at least 1.5 meters away from other people.

Your doctor will most likely only test you if you meet the below criteria:

  • You have returned from overseas in the past 14 days and you develop a respiratory illness with or without fever
  • You have been in close contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case in the past 14 days and you develop a respiratory illness with or without fever
  • You have severe community-acquired pneumonia and there is no clear cause
  • You are a healthcare worker who works directly with patients and you have a respiratory illness and a fever

Test results may take a few days to be confirmed, and during this time you should exercise caution by self-isolating at home, and not attend work or school. This will ensure the protection of those vulnerable throughout the community.
