UPDATE: Illawarra hit hard by wild weather

It's been a massive 24 hours for the SES, as wild weather belted the Illawarra.

Crews have received more than 400 calls for help, with 43 rescues, mostly for people trapped in cars.

Phil Campbell from the SES says although yesterday's downpour came on quickly, it's disappointing to see people are still continuing to drive through floodwaters.

"There really is no excuse to be out in these sort of conditions, especially when the SES and police had asked police to delay travel that was not essential," he said.

Today, the Bureau of Meterology has issued a warning for gale force winds, with gusts reaching up to 80 km/hr, mostly along the coast.

Another 15-20 mls of rain is expected to fall, and become heavy again tonight.

Much of the South Coast rail line is still affected by flooding, so buses will replace trains between Wollongong and Shellharbour, as well as between Wollongong and Port Kembla.

All public schools are open, however St Joseph's Catholic High School at Albion Park has asked parents to keep kids at home if possible, with a number of classrooms damaged by flooding.

The Calderwood Christian School is closed today.

A group of teachers and students were stuck there until 10pm last night, because it was too dangerous to leave.
