The Recreational Aviation Authority has begun its investigation on the ground, after a single seater aircraft crashed in dense bushland near Austinmer, killing the pilot.
Police were yesterday able to use a mobile phone pilot Robert Greig had with him to narrow down the search area.
The Balgownie father was flying in tandem with another pilot on Tuesday night when he disappeared - residents reported hearing a large bang between Bulli Tops and Sublime Point just before 8pm.
The 57-year-old's body was found 12 hours later in the wreckage of his aircraft.
What caused his single seater aircraft to crash, including any role the weather might have played, is now under investigation.
Mr Greig's been described as a family man who was "a bit of a larakin" and a highly experienced and competent pilot.
