Illawarra retail and hospitality workers face cutbacks to pay

Illawarra retaill and hospitality staff will today find out if their pay will be cut on weekends.

The Fair Work Commission has spent the last two years considering whether to axe Sunday rates, in favour of a flat weekend rate.

That would mean workers would be paid the same amount on Saturday as they are on Sunday.

Unions are worried it will mean workers aren't adequately compensated for giving up time with family.

On the other hand, businesses argue Sunday is no longer viewed as a religious day of rest, and shouldn't warrant a higher penalty rate.

The final decision will be announced at 11am.
