Illawarra crashes cost millions

Illawarra crashes cost millions

Road crashes across the Illawarra are not only dangerous, they're costly as well.

The 'Cost of Crashes' report by the NRMA has found accidents in the Illawarra burnt a $878 million hole in the State's economy between 2011 and 2015.

It's big money, although it is a reduction on the $1.1 billion cost of crashes between 2006-2010.

There's also been a 20% reduction in fatalities, from 151 in 2006-10, to 121 in 2011-15.

However that encouraging trend seems to be fading in recent years.

"The Illawarra has made some progress in reducing the number of lives lost on our roads over the five year period of the report which is positive," said NRMA local director Marisa Mastroinanni.

"However after a record low year for lives lost in 2014, we have seen an unwanted spike in 2015 and 2016, and this is clearly something that we need to address as a community."
