For generations, conventional wisdom taught us to spit out the seeds when enjoying a delicious piece of watermelon. But, it turns out that the seeds are an overlooked superfood packed with glorious nutritional benefits.
Don’t worry you don’t have to start eating the seeds along with the melon now, the seeds need to be saved and specially prepared to best unlock their super powers!
Apparently, 100 grams of watermelon seeds contains a generous 34 grams of protein, trumping a comparative 21 grams in sunflower seeds and 19 grams in pumpkin seeds.
British company Mello has jumped on the science and produces lightly roasted and seasoned watermelon seeds.
The seeds are stripped of their black shells to reveal a whitish seed that has a nutty taste, which is much more pleasant than the bitter taste and tough surface of fresh seeds.
So, the evil geniuses that invented seedless watermelons for our supposed convenience were actually denying us this superfood.
